I had a spare Technics double-gimbal tonearm (similar enough to Linn's Basik LV-V), and custom created a mounting base for.
I decided to rebuild and customize a Linn Basik turntable (Linn's entry-level unit, introduced in the late 80s and discontinued sometime in the later 90s). Here's where the story begins. A guy in New Jersey was selling this Basik, because he acquired a LP12 for cheap. Because the dustcover was excellent and the price was right, I went and bought it (I really only needed the dustcover for one of my LP12 builds). Now I'm left with an armless, coverless table. OK, I have an oversize dustcover, so I decided to 'reframe' the Basik turntable to accept this surplus dustcover.
Built the frame out of surplus maple, and everything fit and looks nice. Now the tonearm: Rather than use one of my 'great tonearms', I decided to go the absolute low cost route. I committed an 'audiophile sin' of sorts. I had a spare Technics double-gimbal tonearm (similar enough to Linn's Basik LV-V), and custom created a mounting base for it, using the arm lift and clip from a junk Jelco arm. I even fitted a 'string and weight' antiskate setup (similar to the Thorens idea, using surplus bicycle spokes and some J-B Weld epoxy). Put it all together and it works great!
Now my friend's friend will end up getting himself a turntable that's nicer than anything he's ever had before. Click to expand.LOL, Good one! I guess if I had some serious vinyl and was unsure, I'd be thinking the same way, too.
Linn Basik Turntable
All jokes aside, I feel it is definitely a worthwhile turntable setup, even if it looks crude. Although the tonearm is not a 'super arm', it actually tracks quite well (the pivot-to-spindle, the cartridge overhang, tracking force and antiskate are all precisely adjusted). Click to expand.Thanks.Although for me, it's reasonably easy enough to 're-plinth' the Linn Basik (or even the Linn Axis, as I've done one of those, too), it's almost not worth it from a value or resale standpoint.
I simply decided to re-do this Linn Basik as a challenge to myself, so I could use an existing oversize dustcover (and for the fun of it, which was the same reason I did so on rhw purpleheart Linn Axis a few years ago). Regardless of value, it's still an interesting way to have a unique Linn Basik or Axis.
