The Japanese is based on the light novel series of the same name, written by with illustrations by Vofan. The anime is directed by and produced by the animation studio.
The series debuted with Bakemonogatari and aired 12 episodes between July 3 and September 25, 2009, on the television station. Three additional episodes were distributed on the anime's official website between November 3, 2009, and June 25, 2010. A sequel titled Nisemonogatari aired 11 episodes between January 7 and March 17, 2012. A prequel to the original series titled Nekomonogatari (Black) aired four episodes back-to-back on December 31, 2012. Six further sequels were later adapted under the common moniker of Monogatari Series Second Season: Nekomonogatari (White), Kabukimonogatari, Otorimonogatari, Onimonogatari and Koimonogatari aired between July 6 and December 28, 2013, whereas Hanamonogatari, which was originally meant to air with the others in 2013, was postponed and eventually broadcast separately on August 16, 2014.
The first novel of the 'final season' was adapted as Tsukimonogatari, which aired on December 31, 2014. The several opening themes were written by and composed by and, featuring vocals of the main characters. The ending theme for Bakemonogatari, ' ( 君の知らない物語, lit. 'The Story You Don't Know'), was produced by and released on August 12, 2009 featuring vocals, and peaked at No. 5 in the singles charts.
The ending theme for Nisemonogatari is ' ( ナイショの話, lit. 'Secret Story') sung by and written by Ryo of Supercell. The ending theme for Nekomonogatari (Black) is 'Kieru Daydream' ( 消えるdaydream, lit. 'Vanishing Daydream'), written by Saori Kodama, composed by Satoru Kōsaki and performed. Monogatari Series Second Season features four ending songs: 'Ai o Utae' ( アイヲウタエ, lit. 'Sing of Love'), produced by Jin (Shizen no Teki-P) and performed by for Nekomonogatari (White) and Kabukimonogatari; 'Sono Koe o Oboeteru' ( その声を覚えてる, lit.
'Remembering Your Voice') by Kawano for Otorimonogatari and Onimonogatari; 'snowdrop' by both Haruna and Kawano for Koimonogatari; and 'Shirushi' ( 花痕 -shirushi-) by Kawano for Hanamonogatari. For Monogatari Series Third and Final Season, it features four ending songs: 'Border' by ClariS for Tsukimonogatari, 'Sayonara no Yukue' ( さよならのゆくえ, lit.
