Nov 15, 2015. The only function of a starter is to turn the engine so it can start.(it does not make spark) I suggest you obtain a manual such as chiltons or haynes and do some testing. You will not get any spark if your crank position sensor or cam sensor is faulty or, if there is a problem with another ignition component you have not yet tested. Parts are expensive and often difficult to replace.
No decent shop would guess and just throw parts at the problem till it's fixed, neither should you. Most tests can be done using a digital multi-meter. Nov 03, 2009. Turning over is cranking (different words for same thing) You need to do some testing to determine what is failing. Good guess would be the crank sensor however without testing, you may not solve the problem by just replacing it. I suggest you obtain a decent manual such as chilton or haynes and using a digital multi-meter, perform the tests on your sensors outlined. Since the problem is intermittent you need to test both when working and also when in 'no start'.
